Description
Americans and the media love a lavish, over-the-top wedding and a beautiful bride. Just think of the hype leading up to Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal wedding in the U.K. Months before the wedding, countless well-known, respected newspaper and magazine articles speculated on Kate's dress and what tiara she would wear, and reported about groups of women throwing their own lavish parties to watch the wedding. Many of these articles appeared right alongside serious stories about skyrocketing gas prices, the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, and the Federal budget battles. I absolutely understand that people need distractions from serious and sometimes depressing daily headlines, but I wonder if there isn't some harm in America's fondness for using extravagant weddings as escapist entertainment? In my opinion, the harm doesn't lie so much in the actual wedding, but in the way that the brides are all-too-often portrayed.
